The main reason mailers should presort their mail is to maximize their postal discounts. Presortation of mail saves the postal service time and money which results in lower postage for you.

Basically, presorting involves sorting, grouping, and bundling your mailing pieces by delivery route. This drastically simplifies things for the postal service, since they can route the bundles of mail to the correct delivery facility instead of having to process every individual piece through their sorting machinery. The postal service passes this savings in processing effort on to you, the mailer, as a postage discount.

Mailing internationally is a bit more complicated, as not every country offers postal presort discounts, and you need to drop each country’s mail with their postal service to take advantage of their discounts. However, if you are mailing large quantities on a frequent basis, the savings may well be worth the extra effort.
