Sports Day @ JR Direct
Observers would later comment there was something different in the air that day.
Outside it was one of those gloomy grey days. Inside the office, normal friendly conversations took on a thinly veiled attempt at civility. As the clock struck 12:00 pm the reason became clear...YES, sports day had arrived. We flocked out of the office as one – a mass of determination, focus, and intensity. So intense that the overcast that was looming above opened up, casting the sun upon us while we converged at nearby Lions Park.
Our oneness quickly and abruptly ended when two teams were formed. Suddenly there was a rivalry between the two groups, and it was not a pretty sight. So sick was this rivalry that the teams will remain nameless. We now only refer to them as "Team A" and "Team B".
The following are true events that took place between the time of 12:00 pm and 1:00pm, July 18th, 2008.
12:00 - Walk to Lions Park, some skipping occurred
12:05 - Arrive at Lions Park, find table, eat lunch
12:15 - Split into two groups. Trash talking begins.
12:20 - Game #1 - Blindfold Drawing...and the winner is Team A
12:30 - Game #2 - Egg Toss...and the winner is Team A
12:40 - Game #3 - Building an Inukshuk (if you don't know what this is, click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inukshuk) ...oh yes, and the winner is Team A
12:50 - we had popsicles, shared some laughter, sneaked in an occasional high five and former friendships rekindled as the rivalry diffused - for now.
12:55 - Sports Day comes to an official end, we walk back to office
1:00 - Back in office, in good spirits
The day turned out fine after all. What started out as a gloomy day quickly turned out to be a really fun team building afternoon for all who participated. Congratulations to Team A. What happened to Team B? They were there, but clearly failed to show up….
